Lord Kelvin Lecture: Purposeful Innovation

25th April @ 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm

In a world where commercial success is ever more dependent on innovation, but where ‘patient money’ is ever more scarce, Prof Tim Whitley presents his perspective on ‘purposeful innovation’ where the pursuit of scientific breakthrough is married with practical engineering not only to power BT but to transform the world. Based on the long history of innovation in BT, Tim will provide an update on the research that it is undertaking today that balances the excitement of leading science, engineering prowess and commercial value. Tim will then illustrate these principles by exploring some recent research developments in BT’s core networks, including a recent demonstration of the most efficient transmission of information over optical fibre ever achieved, assuring us that there will be no network capacity crunch in the next 10 years. Finally, Tim will show how the work of some of the world’s greatest minds is still influencing modern research and innovation.
