Sir John Wolfe Barry: Tower Bridge to the BSI – engineering pathways

25th April 2017 @ 5:30 pm

Most people don’t know that Tower Bridge was built by a large team of construction professionals led by John Wolfe Barry or only find out it has a steel structure underneath the stone cladding after visiting. Even less well-known is the fact that Wolfe Barry’s father built the Palace of Westminster and that his close business partner was the younger son of I K Brunel.

This talk will focus on the stand out technical and scientific achievements of Sir John Wolfe Barry, as well as his contribution to progress in Victorian and Edwardian society as an eminent leader.
